In terms of software we need to purchase - one big consideration would be - do we want a database of all songs (in which case all we do is pick the song from a list and the lyrics appear on the screen) - or do we want to use powerpoint (which would be cheaper but all of the lyrics of all the songs would need to be typed in)? Question: are we a part of CCLI?

In terms of actual hardware technology i.e. the laptop - I recommend we buy something that will last us into the future, which is robust enough to withstand a lot of moving around, which can be cable locked (some laptops have a place on their side where you can physically lock them to a steel cable so someone can't just grab it and run), supports different users (so that the "youth" users are separate to the "video" users etc), is highly secure against viruses (we don't want it to crash during a service!) and is also very stable.

My own recommendation is this: I've been using a laptop that I don't turn off at night - I just flip the lid down and it goes to "sleep" - and it literally takes 2 seconds to start up when I flip the screen up. It is extremely stable - I have only found it necessary to restart it 3 times this entire year. It hardly ever crashes and because of its secure nature there is no reason to run any anti-virus system on it (and I've never got a virus - I've also never lost any data). I've used this laptop to help with screen projections at SACLA in Magaliesburg last year, as well as video editing at SACLA and re:fresh (a young adults camp) with excellent results. Its battery time is very good - after a year of use the battery still gives me 3-and-a-half hours of solid use - and I've also used it to listen to music the whole way down to Durban in my car (on its lowest power settings). It can also do sound editing. People's cameras and scanners plug into it and they work straight away (without drivers needing to be installed (for the more technical people)) - and it has all the latest technology - 2 USB ports, a firewire port, a modem and network port. It plays DVD's and can burn CD's. It can also be cable locked. Every projector I've plugged it in to (and I've used quite a few - ranging in technology) has picked it up straight away (I've often seen people struggling to get projectors to "recognise" their laptops when they've plugged them in).

I bought this laptop a year ago and it cost R10,800 - this year the cost has gone down to R9,049 - for a slightly better model too. I'm jealous! I would actually recommend the next model up (because of the split screen output and because of its better specs) - which is currently going for R11,189 (which means you can write DVD's on it too - it's R10,319 without that capacity - and if you know someone in the States and get them to buy it - it is less than R9,000).

I think all the information that Merv researched is great, and certainly allayed some of our fears of long cable runs. We are nowhere near the length that those topics were dealing with, so we should be fine. But sourcing this Scaler/Swith will be interesting.
