We probably also need to think along the lines of what else we could use the laptop for. It would seem quite a waste to purchase a laptop which we'd use once a week on Sundays and it would sit gather dust (and rather expensive dust) on a shelf for most of the week. I'm sure we could come up with more ideas - but the first one that pops into my head is to use the laptop for making videos - which are actually rather easy to do.

We would also need to purchase a video camera - but a low cost digital (R4000) would be an ideal choice for our situation and would go a long way towards us utilising the laptop more towards its potential. We could also make "greetings" videos to send to any missionaries we support overseas - yes, a letter is good but a video gives...well, a picture, a 1000 words, you get the idea. These videos could be put online and they could download them overseas or wherever they are.

Another suggestion is to have a TV in the cry room with a live feed from the video camera in the church - so that people in there could see what is happening. I'm not sure how necessary that would be, but it's an idea nonetheless.

An idea would be to plug in pictures from the many digital stills camera's that people in the church have - so pictures of camps/outings (like the ice-skating last week)/old age home visits - anything church/community related - would go down very well. For instance, the bulletin for the last few weeks has had prayer requests for our local police station and saying how much prayer has helped them. I was thinking it would be great if I could actually see the people we're meant to be praying for (as in a few pictures) - or even better - have a short video from a few people at the police station talking about our involvement there and what they'd appreciate prayer for. So these people become real - and more than just names on paper.

Rog - as we discussed on Sunday the Apple/Mac may be technically superior (?) but due to the invasiveness of Windows and Powerpoint the Mac is too "niche". Just about everybody knows Windows and Powerpoint ! For those who don’t, it will be easy to find someone to teach them. Also, due to volumes, normal PC and notebook hardware is cheap. Most likely cheaper than Mac. You are the only guy who knows Apple? ! (All we know is that that was the fruit that got us all in trouble. Or was that the snake ?)(And that Mac is a fast food) :D

Just about everybody knows Windows and Powerpoint! Yip - so anyone who knows how to open Powerpoint in Windows can do it on a Mac. it’s that easy! Open a document, close a document. Hooray! Plus Macs have built-in permissions so that you can’t delete other people’s files by accident...

For those who don’t, it will be easy to find someone to teach them. It will literally take 10 seconds to teach someone how to open Powerpoint on a Mac. Step 1 - turn on computer. Step 2 - click on Powerpoint icon. I think we can deal with that!

Also, due to volumes, normal PC and notebook hardware is cheap. Ever looked into TCO (Total Cost of Owership)? Remember you need to look into things like the longevity of your PC, things like virus protection (unnecessary on a Mac), buying Microsoft Office as well as Windows XP (Mac’s come with their own operating system) and the PC’s resale value. And the "PC’s are cheap Mac are expensive" isn’t necessarily true - a friend of mine just bought a R20,000 laptop which isn’t superior to my Mac, which I bought a year ago for R11,000. The same model Mac is now R2000 cheaper...

Most likely cheaper than Mac. You are the only guy who knows Apple?! Simply because no-one else has bothered to learn. And the assumption that "normal" people know Windows isn’t quite true...Sarah has a new laptop yet she wants me to show her sometime how to use it - how to burn cds etc. It will be as easy for her to do it on a PC as it would on a Mac - as long as she is willing to learn.

Microsoft changed their Student edition to Home and Student edition for both PC (2007) and Mac (2008).
