How do you tell your story?
Posted by: Roger Saner
I've just read Lynda from TomorrowToday.biz's email update - and she wrote on storytelling as a means of freeing others...of demolishing the barriers between the heart and the outside world. What does it mean to tell our own stories - and what do the means we use tell us about ourselves? To tell her own story, Lynda uses journalling - writing down thoughts and reflections regularly as well as the issues she faces in her life. "Your journey and your story are intertwined and both are continually being written."
Some of the means people use to tell their stories: journalling, writing, dancing, reading, telling jokes, sport, creativity, tai chi, zen gardens, cooking, entertaining, playing the piano, composing music, blogs, diaries, connecting with people, silence (!)...
How do you tell your story? And how do we tell our stories in our faith communities?

In ?he Wounded Healer" Henri Nouwen describes a story fro the Talmud:
?abbi Yoshua ben Levi came upon Elijah the prophet while he was standing at the entrance of Rabbi Simeron ben Yohai’s cave ? He asked Elijah, ?hen will the Messiah come?"
Elijah replied, ?o and ask him yourself."
?here is he?"
?e is sitting at the gates of the city.’
?ow will I know him?’
?e is sitting among the poor, covered with wounds. The other unbind all their wounds at the same time and then bind them up again. But he unbinds one at a time and then binds it up again, saying to himself, ?erhaps I will be needed: If so I must always be ready so as not to delay for a moment.’?
Nouwen adds, ?he Messiah, the story tells us, is siting among the poor, binding his wounds one at a time, waiting for the moment when he will be needed. So it is too with [us]. Since it is [our] task to make visible the first vestiges of liberation for other, [we] must bind our wounds carefully in anticipation of the moment when we will be needed. [We] are called to be wounded healers, the ones who must look after [our] own wounds but at the same time prepared to heal the wounds of other? (82).
Perhaps this is a one of many possible starting points of stories we can tell? Of our wounds, Christ’s wounds; making visible the ?ealing of wounds" available to others?
(Sorry - not very pratcical though!)
