For more than a year, I have been grappling with the issue of homosexuality. I am a happily married man, with three daughters and no homosexual urges, so its not a personal issue for me. I have been trying to understand the Bible, the church and the homosexual, so that I can boldly take a stand on an issue that is incredibly divisive in the Christian world at the moment.

I believe that the debate around homosexuality often has very little to do with homosexuality itself. Just like abortion has become a litmus test in the USA - a kind of short hand to find out who you are - so, too, I believe homosexuality is something more than just an issue of how (and why) two people love each other. It seems to me that this issue cuts deeper - it impacts what we believe about the Bible, how we interpret and apply God's Word in our lives, whether "truth" remains unchanged/unchanging and how much cultural influence is acceptable in our faith and theology. It goes to who is "in" and who is "out" and why, and what that means. In other words, it seems to go to the heart of what we so easily call "the Gospel".

So, no, its not just about men having sex with men. Its about a whole lot more, and that's why I have spent the past year or so working out a detailed Biblical and Christian response to the issue. Over the next few days, I will be sharing parts of the issue on this blog in a series of posts. When I have put up all the "bits" I will also make my full document available, and the flow of the argument will (hopefully) become clear.

If you're not interested in the homosexuality issue, I hope you will see something in how the issue is handled, because there will be others like it in the future. We haven't even started to deal with cloning, in utero genetic upgrading, technological updates to humans, and similar issues coming soon to a lab near you.
