Emerging Church 101
Posted by: Graeme
In my ongoing attempt to assist the readers of this blog (and myself) to get a "feel" for the emerging church movement, I think I've found one of the most balanced reports yet. It is a journalistic approach, and doesn't push too many boundaries, but it does lay out a nice sense of what Emerging Church is all about.
Its in the North Carolina Baptist News Journal, in Religion and Ethics NewsWeekly section, entitled: "New way of 'doing church' emerges, with some controversy", By Kim Lawton. Its available at: http://www.biblicalrecorder.org/content/news/2005/7_18_2005/ne180705new.shtml.
My only criticism is that the only negative voice quoted is Don Carson - see my comments on his comments here. I think Carson is missing the point - he's also responding to fringe elements and radicals in the emerging church movement.
When the Vineyard movement started, they had a mantra: "The Quest for the Radical Middle". They attempted (and still attempt) to allow people to explore the radical fringe, and let that inform the centre, thus keeping it radical. Right now, there isn't a strong centre to the emerging church movement. Not yet. But its coming.
