I have just moved to Stellenbosch and am employed at the Stellenbosch Vineyard church with a job description that has something to do with youth and students and one of the things that has been given to me is the Sunday evening church services.

At the moment these are pretty student-looking in make-up altho there does seem (I've been once) to be a range of people that attend so it is not just a student church per say. And so one part of it is being given some kind of mandate to rethink church and how we do it and how to create/build something that is relevant and God-centered and possibly withÜsome new experimental even risky elements to it...Ü

That is quite exciting and maybe exactly along the kind of theme this blog is meant to be on - still waiting for my internet access to be sorted here so will be a bit sporadic at the moment but once I'm up and running maybe this will become more of an active forum to work through some of this stuff - ideas, motivations, what God is saying - all of that.

So, I guess the question is, how do we take something that has been around for 2000ish years and redesign it in a way that will appeal to Christians (because after all that is who church is meant to be for - will post my church article here sometime so that you can see where I'm coming from on this) [in the shell of a nut, church (as in Sunday meeting) is for Christians whereas the church (as in the people making up the church) is for non-Christians or should be.] but still be totally focused on God and not feel the need to water stuff down or lukewarm it or comfortabilise it to appeal to the masses. It must be uncompromisingly totally and fully God-focused and centered and from there I think the appeal and drawcard will come.

Ah indeed - to be uncompromising in truth and yet to still be a bearer of the "Good News." You’re essentially re-asking the question, "What is the Gospel?" and the answer you get to in the context You’re in...maybe That’s what all Christians in all ages are meant to get to.
